A brook threads the valley floor for well over a mile, hay meadows climb both slopes, and old field hedges knit the whole thing into a wildlife corridor that carries deer, kingfishers and more than 250 species of plant. It is the city&#8217;s third largest country park, after Sutton Park and the Lickey Hills, and unlike either of those it very nearly went under concrete: these fields survive only because people spent three decades fighting the developers off them.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bourn Brook<\/strong> \u2014 the spine of the park, running roughly 1.3 miles along the valley floor, shallow and gravel-bedded, crossed by a series of footbridges and worked by kingfishers along its wooded stretches.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Woodgate Valley Urban Farm<\/strong> \u2014 a registered charity founded in 1988 by a group of local volunteers and still run by volunteers today. It keeps livestock at the western end of the park and uses the animals for confidence-building, therapeutic and forest-school work with young people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The damp hay meadows<\/strong> \u2014 the richest habitat on the site and the reason the plant list runs past 250 species, with displays of wild flowers through spring and summer and bluebells, foxgloves and honeysuckle in the shadier margins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The old hedgerow network<\/strong> \u2014 surviving boundaries from the valley&#8217;s farming centuries, reinforced by a large hedge and tree replanting programme after the park was designated, and now the main highway for small mammals and nesting birds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The line of the Lapal Tunnel<\/strong> \u2014 the Dudley No 2 Canal&#8217;s 3,795-yard bore, built by William Underhill and opened in 1798, ran beneath this ground. Its spoil heaps still show as lumps in the fields; the tunnel was abandoned in June 1917 after mining subsidence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hole Farm Trekking Centre<\/strong> \u2014 a working riding centre on the park&#8217;s fringe that puts horses out onto the bridleways most days of the week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is genuine countryside rather than a landscaped park: field-scale, largely unmanicured, and big enough that you can walk for an hour without repeating yourself. The valley floor is flat and easy going; climb either slope and you get long views back across the meadows, with the city only showing itself at the edges.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A network of surfaced and grass paths, plus dedicated bridleways, running the full length of the valley with numerous crossings of the brook.<\/li>\n<li>Meadows, scrub, blocks of young woodland and several small ponds, managed together as a Local Nature Reserve.<\/li>\n<li>A visitor centre with information displays at the western end of the park, standing alongside the urban farm.<\/li>\n<li>A children&#8217;s play area and picnic ground close to the main entrance, on the flat ground near the centre.<\/li>\n<li>A signed five-kilometre walking route that takes in most of the principal habitats in a single circuit.<\/li>\n<li>A free weekly parkrun, held here every Saturday morning since August 2021 and regularly drawing well over a hundred runners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Families<\/strong> \u2014 flat brook-side paths, a play area and farm animals all within a few minutes of each other make this an easy half-day out with small children.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Runners<\/strong> \u2014 the Saturday parkrun regularly draws a hundred or more, and the length of the valley suits longer off-road training runs on soft ground.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dog walkers<\/strong> \u2014 miles of open ground, and one of very few places in the city where a long walk needs no road crossings at all.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Riders<\/strong> \u2014 dedicated bridleways link the park with the trekking centre, giving hacking away from traffic on the valley floor and slopes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wildlife watchers<\/strong> \u2014 more than 80 bird species have been recorded here, kingfisher, long-eared owl and marsh harrier among them, and muntjac deer have been present since at least 2008.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photographers and botanists<\/strong> \u2014 the summer meadows fill with butterflies and dragonflies, red admiral and small tortoiseshell among the commoner species on the wing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park lies between the Bartley Green and Quinton districts, about five miles south-west of the city centre. There is no railway station within walking distance, but the number 23 bus runs out from the centre by way of Harborne and stops directly at the park entrance, which makes this one of the easier country parks in the region to reach without a car. Entry to the park itself is free and it is open at all hours, with no gates to close. The urban farm is run separately by its charity, keeps its own limited days and hours, charges a small admission, and enforces a strict no-feeding and no-picnics rule as a condition of entry. Note too that the visitor centre building has been closed for periods in recent years while roof repairs are arranged, so it is worth checking before you rely on indoor facilities. Ninety minutes covers a short circuit; allow three hours or more to walk the valley from end to end and back.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring brings bluebells through the woodland blocks, hawthorn breaking white along the hedges, and the first lambs at the farm; the brook runs clear and the ground is still soft. Summer is the park at its peak \u2014 the damp meadows come into full flower, butterflies and dragonflies work the brook margins, and the grass paths dry out enough for easy walking in ordinary shoes. Autumn turns the hedgerows to sloes, haws and blackberries, brings fungi to the woodland edges, and gives the best light of the year across the open fields. Winter is muddy and entirely worth it: the bare hedge lines expose the old field pattern that farming left behind, the brook runs loud and clear, and birdlife is far easier to pick out once the leaves are down \u2014 though sturdy boots stop being optional some time in October.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The valley was farmland and smallholdings, much of it owned by Birmingham Corporation, and its survival as open space was never a foregone conclusion. Paul Cadbury pressed through the 1950s for the valley to be opened up for public use, and in July 1953 the Cadbury interests offered \u00a33,500 towards the cost; in July 1956 the council voted against building on the land. That reprieve proved only partial, and by 1976 housing development had eaten into both sides of the valley. With the remaining fields still under threat, the land was formally designated a Country Park in 1984, after which a substantial programme of hedge and tree replanting set about rebuilding the habitat structure that intensive farming had thinned out. The visitor centre opened in 1987, and a year later, in 1988, a group of local volunteers founded Woodgate Valley Urban Farm beside it as an independent registered charity. The park now covers roughly 450 acres, or 180 hectares, and runs about 1.3 miles along the line of the Bourn Brook. Beneath and beside it lies a piece of canal history: the Lapal Tunnel, 3,795 yards long and built by William Underhill for the Dudley No 2 Canal, opened in 1798 with a bore barely wider than the narrowboats that used it and only about six feet of headroom, so crews legged their boats through in roughly three hours. A steam engine driving a scoop wheel was installed at the Halesowen end in 1841 to push water through and speed the passage. Repeated collapses finished it: the tunnel was abandoned in June 1917 after mining subsidence, though a short stretch at the eastern end stayed navigable to a brickworks at California until 1953.
