The first mention of the mill appears in ancient Greek mythology where its invention is attributed to the king of Laconia from Miletus. The emergence of a water mill in ancient Rome dates back to the first century BC. The creation of mechanisms that use the energy of water flow is considered an important stage in the development of engineering knowledge. When the millstone or other important elements lost their working properties, the old mill was dismantled and replaced with new ones. In addition, people used more and more modern technologies each time. Thus, some of them existed for 400-600 years. Sarehole Water Mill also has more than four hundred years of history. It is located just six kilometres from the centre of Birmingham.

Features of the mill and a steam engine

The mill in the Sarehole area appeared a long time ago. It is known that it was a new mill that was built on the site of the old one in 1542. The previous mill was called Bedell’s or Biddle’s Mill, after one of its first owners. In the first half of the 18th century, it was referred to as “High Wheel Mill”. In the second half of the 18th century, it was used not only for grinding grain. During 1756-1761, part of the building was rented by Matthew Boulton. Being a leading figure of the Lunar Society and a supporter of the Industrial Revolution, he launched the production of sheet metal as well as the grinding and sharpening of tools. In addition, Boulton also produced high-quality buttons. Nothing has been left of that building. The oldest part of the mill dates back to 1765.

With the development of industry, flour consumption increased as well. The pond in front of the mill couldn’t meet the needs of two water wheels, so the owner began to modernise it. Although water remained the main source of energy, in 1855, he installed a steam engine and a chimney for uninterrupted operation. The first engine didn’t survive, so it was replaced by one of similar size and power. The engine doesn’t work today, but it is preserved as a historical object.

The mill worked effectively until 1919. Then there was a period of decline. It was decided to demolish it, but in 1969, the local community started protests. Eventually, the mill was turned into a museum.

The connection between J. R. R. Tolkien’s work and Sarehole Mill

Mills and millers often became characters in legends and stories related to evil and dark forces. Thus, the character of the White Orc appeared in The Lord of the Rings thanks to the fact that John Tolkien lived near Sarehole Mill in his childhood. The character’s prototype was the miller’s son. He looked like a real giant and his grim face and clothes were usually covered in flour. His angry image can be explained by John and his brother’s behaviour. The boys often tried to get into the territory of the mill to see how it was arranged inside. The miller’s son usually guarded there and sometimes he appeared out of the blue.

The countryside around the mill, meadows, forests and marshes inspired the landscape of Middle-earth. John imagined that hobbits could make their homes there, while elves, fairies and other fantastic creatures lived in other places. The creativity of the prominent author helped to find funds for the restoration and preserve the mill as a cultural heritage. A museum tour involves visiting several places dedicated to Tolkien.

Although Sarehole Water Mill is Grade II listed and is managed by the Birmingham Museums Trust, it is still functioning. Guests are invited to visit the local bakery and taste pastries or pizzas made with freshly milled flour. Sarehole Mill is one of the most popular tourist locations that you must visit.

Mills have played an important role in human existence since ancient times, as they greatly facilitate the process of flour making.
